Petersen signs for Somerset

Somerset have announced the capture of South Africa's opening Test batsman Alviro Petersen as their overseas player.

Petersen has signed for Somerset for the first half of the 2013 season.

Petersen, currently in action for the Proteas on their tour of Australia, has previous experience in England having captained Glamorgan in 2011 before representing Essex in the first half of the following season.

The 31-year-old also played a starring role in South Africa's 2-0 triumph in England this summer, most notably striking a Test-best 182 at Headingley, and has signed for Somerset until the start of the Friends Life t20 competition next summer.

He told the county's official website: "Somerset are a successful team in all forms of cricket and I look forward to becoming part of the set-up at the County Ground, and hope that I can help them to win some trophies in 2013."

The announcement comes after fellow South Africa opener Graeme Smith was last week confirmed as Surrey's captain for the next three seasons.

Petersen, who has played 16 Tests and 17 one-day internationals, will bring a wealth of experience to Taunton with a first-class average of just under 40.

Somerset chief executive Guy Lavender said: "He is an exceptional player and has an impressive record as a batsman, which he demonstrated during this summer's series against England and we look forward to welcoming him to Taunton in the spring."
