Petkovic powers to title

Andrea Petkovic claimed the biggest title of her career to date as she won the Family Circle Cup in straight sets in Charleston on Sunday.

The German former world number nine, whose career has been hit by injuries in recent years, claimed her third career title by beating Jana Cepelova in the final.

Petkovic, the 14th seed, started as favourite against unseeded Cepelova, and lived up to the billing with a 7-5 6-2 win.

However, it was not all entirely straightforward, with Cepelova starting strong and serving for the set at 5-4, 40-30 but Petkovic survived and then breezed through the second set.

Petkovic - currently ranked 40th in the world after struggling for the last three years with injury and missing nine months on tour with back, knee and ankle problems - was emotional after the win.

Broke down

"I don't know why but I just sort of broke down," Petkovic said on the WTA website.

"I was happy. Normally I don't cry when I'm sad - I cry when I'm happy, strangely, so it's weird, but I don't know.

"I was just so relieved and proud that I've come back from all these injuries, and I never thought I would play in the finals of the big tournaments again, and so I was just proud and happy and everything together."
