Phelps tipped to make return
Michael Phelps could return to competition "sometime soon" according to his long-time mentor and coach Bob Bowman.
Reports have escalated that the 28-year-old will make a bid for a fifth Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
The 18-time Olympic gold medallist has not competed since London 2012, but last year returned to the United States Anti-doping Agency's testing pool, meaning he has now fulfilled the nine-month waiting period to have his eligibility for competition restored.
Bowman said in quotes on chicagotribune.com: "He looks like he is definitely in shape.
"If he swims a meet in the next couple months and does well, he will probably give it a shot in Irvine (at the United States Championships).
"But he doesn't have to do that to have a shot at the 2016 Olympics."
