Pochettino backs Shaw
Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino says Luke Shaw fully deserves his call-up to the England squad for next week's friendly against Denmark at Wembley.
Shaw joins Southampton team-mates Jay Rodriguez, Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana in Hodgson's last squad before he names his 30-man squad for this summer's World Cup in Brazil.
The 18-year-old left-back, who came through the famed Saints youth academy, was only expected to be named in the England Under-21 squad.
Pochettino said: "All the players that have been called up to the England national squad fully deserve it. It's clear that Roy Hodgson and his team are assessing every single potential player that could go to the national side.
"It is fully deserved for every single player and all credit to them for getting those call-ups.
"Luke Shaw is younger than Ashley Cole and Leighton Baines and youth transmits good energy to the team and that is a positive thing for the team.
"He is a player that is well know, we all know of his quality and it's clear if Roy Hodgson has picked him for the national team, it is because he feels that he can do well with the national side and that he can compliment Cole and Baines.
"So overall it's a positive thing for him and the English national side."
