Puig claims first title
Puerto Rican Monica Puig captured her first WTA title as she got the better of Silvia Soler-Espinosa to win the Internationaux de Strasbourg.
On a day when another up-and-coming player, Eugenie Bouchard, won in Nurnberg, Puig struck another blow for the new generation.
The 20-year-old won the match 6-4 6-3 despite her first serve not working to its best, but winning 89 per cent of the points on her second proved crucial.
"I'm very happy, this is just wonderful," she said when interviewed on court.
"It was a difficult start to the year for me and it just feels great to win my first WTA tournament here. Without my family and my coach I would not be here."
Puig now heads to the French Open where she will meet Sam Stosur in a tough-looking first-round clash.
