Quintana to skip Tour

Nairo Quintana has confirmed he will race this year's Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a Espana but skip the Tour de France.

The 23-year-old Colombian finished second overall and won the best young rider and mountains classifications at last summer's Tour, but has decided to save his next assault on the yellow jersey for later in his career.

Instead, he will make winning the pink jersey at the Giro his main target for 2014, before challenging for the Vuelta's red jersey later in the season.

In his absence, Alejandro Valverde will lead the Movistar team at the Tour.

Quintana told the Colombian newspaper El Tiempo: "I am preparing for my big season goal, the Giro d'Italia. With my team, we have decided to ride it, before going to the Vuelta a Espana.

"Valverde will be the leader in the Tour and, for now, I will focus on the Giro and Vuelta. I will leave the Tour for other years."
