Raonic through in Barcelona

Milos Raonic was the biggest winner on the opening day of the Barcelona Open.

The Canadian 11th seed advanced with a 6-4 7-6 (7-3) victory over Colombian Alejandro Falla.

The only other seed in first day action, Uzbekistan's 18th seed Denis Istomin, was a surprise 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 casualty to another Colombian, Falla's Davis Cup team-mate Santiago Giraldo.

Lucky loser Eduardo Schwank took advantage of his reprieve to beat Spain's Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo 2-6 6-4 6-0, while among the qualifiers who progressed were Portugal's Joao Sousa and Argentina's Federico Delbonis.

Albert Montanes won his all-Spanish showdown against Gerard Granollers-Pujol 7-5 6-2, and other winners were Steve Darcis, Benoit Paire, Jarkko Nieminen, Edouard Roger-Vasselin, Robin Haase, Sergiy Stakhovsky and Filip Krajinovic.
