Rea sets the pace

Jonathan Rea topped the time sheets after the first two practice sessions ahead of Sunday's fourth round of the World Superbike Championship.

A nearby fire and a broken drainage cover on the track at Imola led to delays at the start and end of the second run, with Rea clocking the fastest time of one minute 48.147 seconds.

Rea's fellow Brit and defending champion Tom Sykes was just 0.040secs adrift as he guided his Kawasaki into second place.

The Aprilia Racing pair of Marco Melandri and Sylvain Guintoli, who sits second to Sykes in the current riders' standings, were third and fourth quickest with their combined times from the two Friday sessions.

Following a 45-minute stoppage it was decided to end track activity for the day, despite there being 12 minutes of the second session remaining.

That left the Ducati of Davide Giugliano fifth, ahead of Rea's team-mate Leon Haslam with Loris Baz and Leon Camier rounding out the top 10.
