Real Madrid v Man Utd preview

Paul Scholes will be missing for Manchester United when they face Real Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 encounter on Wednesday.

Scholes has not travelled with the United squad to the Spanish capital as he is nursing a knee problem.

The Premier League leaders have no other concerns to contend with.

Phil Jones and Jonny Evans have shrugged off knocks in order to make the trip, while Ashley Young and Anders Lindegaard are in Sir Alex Ferguson's thoughts.

Real are expected to call upon the services of Xabi Alonso.

The former Liverpool midfielder sat out Saturday's 4-1 victory over Sevilla, alongside Mesut Ozil and Sami Khedira, but he trained with the rest of the Real squad on Tuesday.

Pepe could also be available to Jose Mourinho after being put through his paces in the build-up to the game, but Raphael Varane faces a race against time to prove his fitness.

Club captain Iker Casillas is sidelined with a broken hand, meaning Diego Lopez will continue to provide goalkeeping cover.
