Red Bulls move level with DC

The New York Red Bulls moved level on points at the top of the MLS Eastern Conference with a 3-2 win over leaders DC United.

DC took a first-minute lead through Chris Pontius but Brandon Barklage's first-half brace had the Red Bulls ahead.

Jan Gunnar Solli made it 3-1 before Pontius' second cut the deficit, the Red Bulls moving ahead of Sporting Kansas City into second place.

In the Western Conference, the Portland Timbers enjoyed a surprise 2-1 win over the Seattle Sounders to ease the pressure on coach John Spencer.

Kris Boyd and David Horst put the hosts 2-0 up in the first half and they held on despite Eddie Johnson's second-hlaf strike.

A fractious finale saw Portland substitute Lovel Palmer, who had been on the field little more than 10 minutes, and Seattle's Freddy Montero sent off.
