Red letter day for Whelan
Ronan Whelan rode his first Group winner as Custom Cut took the Big Bad Bob Gladness Stakes at the Curragh.
The four-year-old had disappointed last time out in the Irish Lincolnshire but was back on song this afternoon - making just about all the running to secure the Group 3 prize at odds of 25/1.
Nephrite, who was bidding to overcome a 350-day absence, caught the eye sticking on from last place into a never nearer second as La Collina was pushed out into third having held every chance.
A delighted Whelan told At The Races: "He likes his own way out in front and just kept winding it up and winding it up.
"Things didn't go to plan in the Lincolnshire but he scoped badly and you can rule that one out."
Foxtrot Romeo was sent off a hot 9/4 favourite having opened up at 4/1 on course but Tommy Carmody's charge was unable to quicken having held a decent early position.
