Red Wings win Classic preview

Daniel Alfredsson and Pavel Datsyuk scored shoot-out goals as the Detroit Red Wings beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4.

In a dress rehearsal for the Winter Classic, the win snapped a streak of 11 straight defeats in shoot-outs for the Red Wings dating back to last season.

Pavel Datsyuk, Joakim Andersson and Tomas Jurco scored in the first period for Detroit to put them 3-1 up, but Toronto stormed back to take a 4-3 lead and they needed a third-period goal from Tomas Tatar to force overtime against opponents they will meet again in the Winter Classic on January 1.

Martin Jones stopped 23 shots to claim his eighth straight victory - 3-2 over the Colorado Avalanche via a shoot-out - to equal the best ever start to an NHL career by a goalie.

Jeff Carter and Justin Williams tallied for the Kings and Anze Kopitar scored in the shootout, while Jones stopped all three shots he faced in the tie-breaker.

Antoine Vermette scored his third goal in overtime as the Phoenix Coyotes beat the Ottawa Senators 4-3.

Vermette's hat-trick was backed up by a goal from Radim Vrbata.

Sidney Crosby's 20th goal of the season helped the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 4-3 victory over the Calgary Flames.

Marek Zidlicky scored twice and Andy Greene tallied in overtime as the New Jersey Devils beat the Washington Capitals 5-4.

The Boston Bruins beat the Buffalo Sabres 4-1, the Columbus Blue Jackets saw off the Philadelphia Flyers 6-3 and the Montreal Canadiens were 4-3 overtime winners over the Nashville Predators.

There were also wins for the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Anaheim Ducks, the St Louis Blues and the San Jose Sharks.
