Homer Bailey gave the ideal post-season audition as he threw a no-hitter to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a 1-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Bailey, who is not assured of a place in the Reds' play-off rotation, struck out 10 and walked just one as he went tantalisingly close to perfection, throwing the 16th no-no in Reds history.
It was the seventh no-hitter of the season, tying an MLB record set in 1990.
The only run of the contest came in the first inning as Todd Frazier scored Brandon Phillips on a sacrifice fly.
