Reed on song in California

Patrick Reed built up a three-shot lead during the second round at the Humana Challenge in California.

The overnight leader was on course to follow up his opening-round 63 with another impressive score as he sat six under par after 13 holes, 15 under for the tournament.

The American, playing on the La Quinta course, had an eagle at the par-five fifth, along with five birdies and a bogey.

Reed led by one shot after the first round, but his closest challenger was now Brendon Todd on 12 under.

He was five under through 10 on the PGA West resort's Palmer course, one of three different courses the tournament is being played across.

He had five birdies in his opening seven holes.

Two more Americans, Ryan Palmer and Daniel Summerhays, were both a shot further back, with a group of four players on 10 under.

Scotland's Russell Knox and Martin Laird were the highest-placed European on eight under overall.

Knox went through 14 holes on the La Quinta course in one under, while Laird was on the charge on the Palmer course, five under for the day after nine holes.
