Rheu lands the Lanzarote

Saphir Du Rheu powered to victory under 5lb claimer Harry Derham in the William Hill Lanzarote Hurdle at Kempton.

The promising conditional brought the five-year-old, trained by Paul Nicholls, to lead at the second last.

The 6/1 chance asserted his authority to win by six lengths from If In Doubt with Like Minded a length away third.

Junction Fourteen, the 9/2 favourite, fell at the final flight when beaten.

Nicholls' assistant Tom Jonason said: "We thought he had a fairly good chance. We were hopeful he'd handle the ground and Harry's claim has helped.

"Paul's first remark was what a chaser he'll make. He's a class horse, more than just a handicapper, and Paul was already thinking of a race at Haydock in three weeks or maybe the National Spirit at Fontwell."
