Riders fend off Rocks in BBL

Leicester Riders maintained their two-point lead over Newcastle Eagles in the British Basketball League with a 76-72 win over Glasgow Rocks.

An EJ Harrison three-pointer saw the Rocks finish the first quarter strongly with a 24-15 lead but the Riders trimmed the deficit to 41-36 at the halfway stage.

Hosts Glasgow found themselves 50-40 ahead within two minutes of the third quarter beginning but Leicester rallied to take a 55-54 lead into the final stanza.

A pair of free-throws from Gareth Murray meant the Rocks trailed by just a point with 22 seconds remaining, but Pavol Losonky scored the last three of his 22 points to confirm victory.

Newcastle kept the pressure on the leaders thanks to a hard-fought 90-78 win over the Surrey Heat.

The Heat recovered from a poor start to win the second quarter but the Eagles edged themselves back in front thanks to resolute blocking and stealing.

Charles Smith top-scored with 33 points while 20 points from Frank Holmes proved to be the bright spark in the Heat's afternoon.

The Worcester Wolves moved to within two points of the top four by beating the Durham Wildcats 83-79 while Adrian Sturt scored 31 points as London Lions saw off the threat of the Manchester Giants with a 81-64 win.

Elsewhere, Sheffield Sharks took control of their BBL Trophy semi-final with the Cheshire Phoenix thanks to a 74-60 victory at Chester's Northgate Arena in the first leg.
