Rio: I lost respect for Suarez

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand says he "lost respect" for Liverpool's Luis Suarez after he opted not to shake Patrice Evra's hand.

Ferdinand refused to shake Suarez's hand prior to United's 2-1 Premier League win at Old Trafford on Saturday, a direct consequence of Suarez opting not to shake Evra's hand as the players conducted their traditional pre-match greeting.

It was Suarez's first start since serving an eight-match ban for racially abusing Evra at Anfield in October.

The incident came a fortnight after the Football Association scrapped the handshake prior to Chelsea's FA Cup fourth round tie at QPR and an equally tricky reunion between Rio's brother, Anton Ferdinand, and John Terry, who has been accused of racially abusing the defender, also in October.

"I thought it was bad decision-making from their guy," Ferdinand told MUTV.

"It's a touchy subject at the minute and things could have been put to bed a little bit easier if the handshake had been done.

"After seeing what I saw I decided not to shake his hand.

"He's not got the respect that he needs to have in these situations and acknowledge he's made a mistake and say sorry and move on from that.

"I lost all respect for the guy after that."

Sir Alex Ferguson has branded Suarez "a disgrace" and called for Liverpool to sack the South American.

However, that is not going to happen and Ferdinand accepts when the two clubs meet next season, there will be even more scrutiny on them.

"It could have been resolved, maybe, between the two people who are involved," he said.

"After this, it's not great. It's disappointing. I expected more from the other guy but it wasn't to be."

Meanwhile, thousands of copies of independent United fanzine Red Issue were seized by police outside the ground after they were found to contain a "racially offensive image".

The fanzine included a spoof poster of a Ku Klux Klan hood along with the words "LFC" and "Suarez is Innocent".

what do you think?

Ferdinand why don't you just shut up. People are sick of people like you using the racist card. But it's ok for blacks towards whites. And who are you to talk about morals people have not forgot you skipping a drugs test. Now go and hide behind BIG GOB Ferguson. For the record Eveas hand was not offered high enough in my opinion to warrant that he wanted to shake hands.

Sure Suarez does not have to shake hands but he let down his Manager, Kenny said things were about to be resolved and must feel that he lied to me.

I'm sorry is this not the same player who was talking about not shaking terrys hand last week, a player who as yet has not been found guilty, we will never now whether he would have because of the injury to terry. so to say he has lost respect and from a player who skipped a drug test, talking about respect what a joke. and yes suarez should have made every attempt to shake evras hand then we wouldn't be taking about this today.

watch the video of the "missed handshake" again. it looks like evra intentionally put his hand out late to try to humiliate saurez who then decided not to be taken advatage of. it's evra who's guilty. suarez hand his hand out for ages before evra decided to react.

Sick of the whole subject. One trying to gain points over the other. Football is a game consisting of two teams of opponents ( who probably hate each other) and to think a handshake before a game will solve anything is mistaken. As for racisim ha, All they see is the colour of the opponents shirt and up go the mists If it's going to be a problem then ban it. (footballers will soon stop shouting the odds if they thought they were going to lose their filmstar wages)

This needs to be sorted out fast - fans are getting involved in the racism (eg the fanzines) and, not only does it radiate a negative image for Britain, but it's encouraging children to start being racist. Is this what we need? This should have been dealt with between Suarez and Evra - Ferdinand and other players should keep their nose out.

Was good to see Rooneys comment on the whole thing (basically it's between the players and didn't want to talk about it). I think they should all grow up. There is no room for racism in any sport. They are supposed to be role models and should act like it.

Its time the Liverpool manager had serious words with Suarez and the rest of the team. by standing by the cheat he is condoning what happened. Giving out that its OK to be racist. Get you finger out Kevin and come down hard on Suarez
