Robson advances in girls' singles

Laura Robson reached the third round of the girls' singles at the US Open today with a hard-fought 6-3 7-6 (7/3) win over Chanelle Van Nguyen.

Eighth seed Robson, a semi-finalist last year, was pushed hard, with a single break of serve proving enough to win the opening set.

She broke early in the second set but was pegged back before coming through the tie-break to set up a meeting with another American, either Robin Anderson or Kyle McPhillips, in the last 16.

But there was disappointment for Junior Wimbledon semi-finalist Oliver Golding, who was beaten 6-4 6-2 by US 16th seed Mitchell Frank.

After a tight first set, the 16-year-old Londoner, who reached the quarter-finals at the Youth Olympics last month, broke at the start of the second but could not hold onto his advantage and lost six games in succession to crash out.
