Robson suffers Swedish defeat

Briton Laura Robson lost to third seed Anabel Medina Garrigues in the first round of the Sony Swedish Open on Tuesday.

Robson's hopes of building on last week's stunning run to the semi-finals in Palermo were dashed in Bastad.

Robson, who jumped back into the world's top 100 as a result of her heroics in Sicily, was beaten 6-4 7-6 (7/4) by Medina Garrigues.

The British number four claimed the first break of serve in the opening set but struggled to hold her own against the world number 35, dropping it three times to lose the first set.

Robson was let down by her serve again in the second set, as despite breaking the Medina Garrigues serve twice she was forced into a tie-break where her opponent's experience told to clinch victory in one hour and 41 minutes.

Meanwhile, German second seed Julia Goerges eased into the second round with a 6-2 6-2 win over Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova of the Czech Republic.

But Italian fourth seed Roberta Vinci went down 6-4 7-5 to Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson in an inconsistent match which saw the favourite broken seven times.

Sixth seed Klara Zakopalova beat German qualifier Annika Beck 6-2 3-6 6-4 and Bulgaria's Tsvetana Pironkova overcame Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic 6-2 7-5.

Russian fifth seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova beat Austria's Patricia Mayr-Achleitner 6-2 6-2, and there were also wins for Shahar Peer, Silvia Soler-Espinosa, Mariana Duque-Marino, Kateryna Bondarenko, Arantxa Rus and Polona Hercog.
