Roy encouraged by Donetsk draw

England boss Roy Hodgson insisted his side remain a work in progress after their battling 1-1 Euro 2012 draw with France in Donetsk on Monday.

Joleon Lescott put the Three Lions ahead with a header from point-blank range after half an hour.

But Manchester City midfielder Samir Nasri levelled before the break, forcing England onto the back foot for most of the second period.

However, France were unable to break their defences a second time, allowing Hodgson's side to collect what could turn out to be a valuable point.

"I've had three games," he said.

"I am satisfied with those three games but you don't become a really good team in three matches and 10 training sessions.

"The French have gone 22 games unbeaten. They've not done that overnight.

"It's been (the result of) people playing together, getting to know each other's games.

"The longer we play together, the better we'll become too."

Hodgson cannot be criticised for the boldness of his team selection.

Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck impressed on his first competitive start and Hodgson's decision to hand 18-year-old Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain the biggest match of his young life was fully justified.

"He deserved it," said Hodgson.

"The way he's played since coming into the squad, the performance he gave against Belgium, the ability he has to skip past defenders, which is an important ability to have, is excellent.

"I said to him before the game that this was a big occasion, but there'll be so many more big occasions in the rest of his career so he shouldn't hang himself on this occasion.

"I just wanted him to play to the best of his ability, and remember he had plenty of games for England ahead of him."

Thankfully Hodgson was able to report no fresh injury concerns, other than a snapped Achilles tendon for goalkeeping coach Ray Clemence.

However, as so many of his squad lack recent match practice, he does believe their overall fitness will improve as a result of playing in such searing heat.

"There is no doubt the heat has an effect," he said, "and the earlier you play, the more effect it has.

"Our team felt the heat, but the French felt it as well.

"We all have to come to terms with it."

Opposite number Laurent Blanc conceded that whilst France did not deserve to lose, they did not do enough to win either and lamented a poor start, which he was concerned might cost his team the game.

"England were excellent for the first 20 minutes," he said.

"We took a while to get into the game and, as ever, we were punished.

"Perhaps it was inexperience but we didn't start the game as we'd hoped to.

"Had we not reacted we could have lost this game.

"I hope that doesn't happen again. In the next game, we have to get into it right from the outset."

what do you think?

If that is the best England can offer, for the rest of the Euro tournament I think I will decorate my house and watch the paint dry!

Performances like this will get football stopped because of the high risk of boring people to death. England had 3 shots on goal and 2 headed attempts and the French managed 9 shots and 4 headed attempt in 90 minutes.

Pleased to see England scrape a draw. After all, the £450m cost of the team does seem a little high.

I think that in this day and age everyone is entitled to their own opinion without being aggressive or rude...you are just plain thick though John...Just let England get on with their jobs and perhaps you'll have something to cheer about.I however am feeling a little hot so i'm going for a swim in my private pool on my private terrace and am going to sip a pina colada made by my private maid

Michael Wood, we were definitely not watching the same game; you were under the influence of alcohol. As the old drunkard said: "I've never been to bed with an ugly woman, but I've woken up with a few." The colour I'm doing the decorating? Tickled pink!

This is England we are talking about here, not some small little country fighting above its weight, England ! Now if you English fans are happy with two 1-0 wins against such powerhouses such as Belgium and Norway, and a draw against France, then so be it, can you see the Spanish, German or Dutch teams being happy with drab boring results like these? England should be winning these things, not just being happy due to the fact they didnt lose.
