Sabres too strong for Lightning

The Tampa Bay Lightning welcomed back star man Steven Stamkos and handed a debut to Ryan Callahan, but still lost 3-1 to the Buffalo Sabres.

Stamkos returned after missing 45 games with a broken shin bone and was announced as the new team captain in the wake of the deal that sent Martin St. Louis to New York in return to Callahan.

But Buffalo goaltender Jhonas Enroth stole the show, making 43 saves - three from Stamkos and four from Callahan -as the Sabres won with goals from Tyler Myers, Marcus Foligno and Cody Hodgson.

Mike Richards capitalised on a mistake from Tobias Enstrom to score a late goal and seal a 3-1 win for the Los Angeles Kings over the Winnipeg Jets, a sixth-straight win for Los Angeles.

Dustin Brown and Alec Martinez were also on target.

Radim Vrbata's two goals helped the Phoenix Coyotes to a first win over the Montreal Canadiens since 1998 as they won 5-2 in Glendale.

Tuukka Rask recorded his sixth shutout of the season and claimed a first career win over Washington as the Boston Bruins beat the Capitals 3-0.

Andre Benoit's goal with 31 seconds left in overtime gave the Colorado Avalanche a 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings.

Rookie Nathan MacKinnon got the assist and has now had a point in 13 straight games, breaking Wayne Gretzky's record for an 18-year-old NHL player.

Andrew Shaw and Jonathan Toews had two goals each to help the Chicago Blackhawks to a 6-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets, while Ian Cole recorded a goal and an assist in a 2-1 win for the Nashville Predators against the St Louis Blues.

Tyler Seguin added two assists to his hat-trick of goals as the Dallas Stars beat the Vancouver Canucks 6-1.

Taylor Hall scored in overtime as the Edmonton Oilers came from 2-0 down in the second period to beat the New York Islanders 3-2, while the San Jose Sharks came back from a 2-0 deficit to claim a 5-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins with Brent Burns netting two in the third period to turn things around for the Sharks.
