Safarova shows her class

Czech sixth seed Lucie Safarova hit back with two perfect sets to see off Magdalena Rybarikova and reach the second round of the Portugal Open in Oeiras.

World number 26 Safarova was broken three times in the opening set by her Slovakian opponent but responded in style to pull off a 4-6 6-0 6-0 win in one hour and 40 minutes.

Serbia's Bojana Jovanovski came through a tight clash with Puerto Rico's Monica Puig 6-4 4-6 6-4 and there were also wins for Yanina Wickmayer, Yaroslava Shvedova and Ons Jabeur.

In the men's first round, Kazakh eighth seed Mikhail Kukushkin was beaten 6-1 7-6 (7/3) by Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain, but fellow Kazakh Andrey Golubev beat Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 6-3 3-6 6-4.
