Salford to get Swinton cash

Championship part-timers Swinton have joined the fight to save Super League neighbours Salford.

The Lions play the City Reds in a pre-season friendly at the Salford City Stadium on Sunday, just 24 hours before the beleaguered Super League club are due to facing a winding-up petition.

Traditionally the lower division outfits receive the proceeds from pre-season matches against Super League opposition but Swinton are to donate a substantial slice of the gate receipts to their hosts' survival bid.

Swinton boss Steve McCormack, a former head coach of the Reds, said: "It's sad to see the situation Salford are in and we should get behind them and give them all the support we can.

"It's only a couple of seasons ago that Salford helped us out by letting us play at the Willows so I would ask every Swinton fan to turn up for this game."

Salford chairman John Wilkinson said: "It's a fantastic gesture from (Swinton chairman) John Kidd and his board of directors and one that we will remember.

"The last few years have seen the clubs pitch in to help each other when needed and it's great that these two famous old clubs are fighting so hard together to ensure that the people of the city of Salford have sporting teams to watch and be proud of.

"It is so important for a city's mood, pride and identity that it has standard bearers to cheer and this game is an opportunity for the people of Salford to make a loud and clear statement - that our city has its our own sporting identity - an identity that must be protected at all costs.

"We need as many people as possible to get down to this game and show that sport in this city is something the people want and are prepared to support."

Salford, who owe money to HM Revenue and Customs and former players Vinnie Anderson and Luke Patten, were forced to cancel their first scheduled friendly against Leigh after being unable to raise a team.

Meanwhile, Wigan fans will get their first chance to see new signing Scott Taylor in action on Sunday when he plays against the Centurions at Leigh Sports Village.

The former Hull KR prop will line up alongside Iain Thornley, Logan Tomkins, Gil Dudson and Anthony Gelling, who will all be bidding for place in coach Shaun Wane's team for next month's Super League opener against Salford.
