Gillingham chairman Paul Scally has dismissed claims his club made an approach for Port Vale manager Micky Adams.
Vale took to their official Twitter page on Thursday to state they had rejected a move for Adams for the Gills, who relieved boss Andy Hessenthaler of his duties at the end of the season.
They tweeted: "Port Vale have refused permission for Gillingham to speak to the club's manager Micky Adams #pvfc"
However, Scally distanced Gillingham from the statement, telling BBC Kent it was "complete rubbish" before refusing to comment further.
Adams began his playing career with Gillingham in 1979 and enjoyed four years at the Priestfield Stadium.
He guided Vale to mid-table in League Two last term despite the Stoke-on-Trent outfit entering administration.
