Schalke snap up Wetklo

Schalke have signed goalkeeper Christian Wetklo on a one-year contract to provide cover for regular number one Ralf Fahrmann.

The Royal Blues had already signed Fabian Giefer as Fahrmann's understudy, but an injury which has sidelined him for a few months has prompted them to make a move for the former Mainz custodian.

The 34-year-old was released by Mainz this summer.

"We have a total of five goalkeepers on our books for the first team and reserves," said the club's director of sport Horst Heldt.

"Given the temporary losses of Giefer and (Louis) Hulsmann, we do not want to take any risks, which is why we are signing Wetklo, an experienced goalkeeper who knows very well what his role is going to be."

Although Wetklo will not get regular first-team football, he is nevertheless delighted to have joined the team he supported as a child.

"Once Schalke, always Schalke - this is a dream come true for me, to come home after 15 years," Wetklo told the club's official website.

"It's an overwhelming feeling of happiness to be able to play for this club, who I used to support from the stands in the Parkstadion as a six-year-old."
