Schalke stand by injured Aogo

Schalke are still going to consider buying defender Dennis Aogo on a permanent basis from Hamburg, in spite of a serious knee injury which could rule him out for the rest of the season.

The Royal Blues took the 26-year-old on loan from Hamburg for the season, but he tore cruciate knee ligaments in training ahead of the Stuttgart match at the weekend.

He faces six months on the sidelines and may therefore have played his last game for the club, at least during the one-year loan spell, although he could be back next season.

Schalke have an option to make the move a permanent one, but they have to inform Hamburg of their intentions prior to an April cut-off point.

And despite the injury, Aogo may have already done enough to convince Schalke to sign him.

"Aogo's done really well and we're going to stand by him," said the club's director of sport Horst Heldt to the Bild newspaper.
