Scots sweat on Ferguson fitness

Huddersfield forward Dale Ferguson is battling to be fit for Scotland's Alitalia Cup clash with England Knights in Edinburgh on Sunday.

Scotland coach Dave Rotherham, whose side lost 30-18 to Ireland in their opening game, has made two changes to his 20-man squad, bringing in Warrington youngster Ben Hellewell and Sheffield Eagles prop Jack Howieson in place of Wigan's Shae Lyon-Fraser and ex-Castleford prop Paul Jackson.

Hellewell, who will join Featherstone next week, won his first cap against France last year, while veteran Howieson hopes to win his 11th, nine years after making his debut.

Second rower Ferguson will seek medical clearance to play after suffering with a tooth abscess which has required surgery this week.

"Dale's had to have an abscess drained and a tooth removed this week and has been in a lot of pain," Rotherham said.

"He is touch and go for Sunday. Hopefully he'll be fit as he's used to playing against the quality of opposition we'll face in the England Knights.

"It's a great challenge, but also a massive opportunity for our lads to test themselves at that level.

"We've got a lot of experience ourselves and some younger lads who are finding their way in the game. They can fulfil their potential on Sunday.

"It's a chance for players like Sam Barlow and Walker twins, who were outstanding against Ireland, to prove that they should be playing in Super League every week."

The Knights, who opened their campaign with a 56-4 victory over Ireland in Belfast last weekend, are set to be unchanged.

"Scotland will be determined to make amends for their disappointing result to Ireland a few weeks ago and we know it will be a tough game," said coach Kieron Purtill.

"I'm expecting it to be a very physical battle and the conditions will play a part as well but if we can get our attitude right then I'm confident we can get the result."
