Scudamore error leads to ban
Tom Scudamore's bid to complete a double at Cartmel went embarrassingly wrong when the jockey took the wrong course.
Having scored aboard the Tim Easterby-trained Monita Bonita on his first ride of the afternoon in the Racing UK Anywhere Package Mares' Handicap Hurdle, his mount in the following contest, the Champagne Louis Roederer Handicap Hurdle, was quietly supported before the race.
However when the rest of the field edged left to take the first hurdle, Scudamore and the Karen McLintock-trained Run Forest Run edged right and instead jumped the steeplechase fence.
The jockey, who appeared to realise the error of his ways almost immediately, pulled Run Forest Run up straight away but the stewards had no alternative but to ban the jockey for 12 days (August 13, 14, 16, 17, 19, 21, 22, 23 and 25-28 inclusive).
There was an even sadder post-script to the contest for connections of Cartmel regular Galley Slave, whose bid for a hat-trick of wins saw him fall at the third flight. Despite giving him treatment on the track for over half an hour, racecourse vets were unable to save his life.
