Seeds march on in Pattaya
Seeds Sorana Cirstea and Ekaterina Makarova booked their places in the quarter-finals of the Pattaya Open with straight sets wins on Wednesday.
With top seed Sabine Lisicki and second-placed Svetlana Kuznetsova pulling out of the tournament on Tuesday due to an injury, it really opened up the draw and Cirstea and Makarova made sure they remain in the hunt for the title.
The third-ranked Cirstea from Romania beat Alison Riske 6-3 6-4 in an hour and 23 minutes.
The 23-year-old initially struggled on her own serve as she was broken in the fourth game of the match, but found her composure and claimed two breaks to take the opening set.
With Riske losing her serve twice in the opening five games of the second, Cirstea held her nerve to see the match out.
Next up is a clash against Karolina Pliskova after the Czech player beat Alla Kudryavtseva 4-6 6-3 6-4.
Russian fourth seed Makarova is also into the last eight after she took just over an hour to dispatch compatriot Vera Zvonareva, who has suffered with illness and injury the past 18 months, 6-0 6-2.
