Sehwag shines in Abu Dhabi

MCC captain Virender Sehwag steered his side to a six-wicket victory on the final day of their fixture against Durham in Abu Dhabi.

Former India batsman Sehwag blasted 18 fours and a six as he made 109 from just 97 deliveries to help the MCC comfortably reach a target of 224 in 51 overs.

Samit Patel chipped in with an unbeaten 48 to ensure defending county champions Durham will head into their title defence off the back of a defeat.

Beginning the day on 48-2, Daniel Bell-Drummond helped combine with Sehwag take the score to 106 before the Kent right-hander offered a return catch to Scott Borthwick (2-77).

The England leg-spinner was expensive thereafter, though, going at more than five runs an over.

Sehwag looked set to be there at the finish until he was dismissed with just 13 more required, Paul Coughlin taking the catch to give Jamie Harrison his second wicket of the innings.

However the damage had already been done for Durham, who begin their bid to retain their trophy against newly-promoted Northamptonshire on April 13.

Sri Lankan wicketkeeper Prasanna Jaywardene came out to help all-rounder Patel, who hit six boundaries in his unbeaten 61-ball knock, see the MCC over the line with plenty of time to spare in the season's curtain-raiser.
