Sharapova into last eight

Maria Sharapova dominated Daniela Hantuchova to book her place in the quarter-finals of the Open GDF Suez in Paris.

The Russian had won the last eight of their nine career meetings and it was one-way traffic for the top seed as she eased through 6-0 6-1.

It was Sharapova's first match since suffering a surprise quarter-final exit at the hands of Dominika Cibulkova at last week's Australian Open.

However, she showed no ill-effects as she brushed the Slovakian aside in an hour and 10 minutes.

Her serve held firm as she sent down 10 aces and saved all seven break points against her, while Hantuchova was broken six times in all.

She will play either Yvonne Meusberger or Kirsten Flipkens in the last eight after eighth seed Flipkens came through her first round match 6-3 4-6 6-2 against Mona Barthel.

In other opening round matches on Wednesday, Elina Svitolina of Ukraine shocked sixth seed Roberta Vinci 6-3 0-6 7-5 while Kazakhstan's Galina Voskoboeva defeated Stefanie Voegele 5-7 7-5 7-6.
