Sherman chasing history
Art Sherman will try to secure his place in the record books as he sends out favourite California Chrome in Saturday's Kentucky Derby.
The 77-year-old would become the oldest trainer in the history of the great race if his charge triumphs, surpassing Charlie Whittingham who won his second Derby with the mighty Sunday Silence in 1989 at the age of 76.
California Chrome arrives on the back of four straight wins, culminating in his Santa Anita Derby victory last month , and he will start from stall five in the 'run for the roses'.
Sherman told www.bloodhorse.com: "I like that he has some speed horses to his inside, that way he can just sort of sit in there and then float into that first turn.
"I could see us right in behind the leaders and be in the clear down the back. If Victor (Espinoza, jockey) could get him in the clear near the three-eighths pole, I think we'll have a big chance."
Santa Anita Derby runner-up Hoppertunity was withdrawn on Thursday due to a foot injury and that leaves Arkansas Derby winner Danza next best in the British markets.
He is one of four runners for trainer Todd Pletcher along with We Miss Artie, Vinceremos and Intense Holiday.
Wicked Strong, who is trained by James Jerkens, is also a popular choice after winning the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct on his most recent outing, although he must contend with a wide draw in 20.
The trainer said: "It's better than one but not a whole lot. He's just going to have to work his way down a little bit.
"At least he's got a nice long run down the stretch and it looks like the speed should be in a nice clump where he can draft in behind them, so it might work out a better trip than we think. It'll be tricky, that's for sure. I'll just try to convince myself it's not as bad as time goes by."
Mike Maker also has multiple runners as he saddles Vicar In Trouble, the mount of leading lady rider Rosie Napravnik, General A Rod and Harry's Holiday.
Blue Grass Stakes winner Dance With Fate, Samraat, Tapiture and Florida Derby runner-up Wildcat Red are also to the fore in the betting.
