Shields shines for Britain

Colin Shields netted a hat-trick as Great Britain finished their World Championship Division One Group B campaign with a 4-2 win over Poland.

GB must now wait to learn whether they have secured the bronze medal, with them requiring hosts Lithuania to beat Croatia in regulation time in the last game of the tournament later.

After a scoreless first period, Shields scored twice in quick succession (22.54 and 28.29) to put GB 2-0 ahead.

But Pawel Dronia (35.38 powerplay) and Krystian Dziubinksi (45.31) saw already-promoted Poland pull level before a five-on-three powerplay marker from Robert Dowd (52.34) restored GB's lead.

After Poland pulled goaltender Kamil Kosowski for an extra skater, GB made sure of the win courtesy of Shields' empty-net strike with 89 seconds left.
