Shvedova sees off Schiavone

Yaroslava Shvedova set up a clash with Serena Williams in the second round of the Sony Open after upsetting Francesca Schiavone in Miami.

Shvedova, currently ranked 59th in the world, ousted the experienced Italian 6-4 6-2 in Miami to progress through to face the reigning champion and top seed in this year's tournament.

Casey Dellacqua looks set to continue to rise in the world rankings after overcoming Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland 6-3 6-2.

The Australian - a quarter-finalist at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells last week, managed to stave off the threat of four break points. she will next face sixth seed Simona Halep.

Maria Sharapova now knows she will be up against Japan's Kurumi Nara, who beat Annika Beck 7-6 (7/2) 6-4, in her first match, while Agnieszka Radwanska meets Romina Oprandi following the Italian's 6-2 6-4 victory over Bojana Jovanovski.

Elsewhere, Tsvetana Pironkova beat Galina Voskoboeva 6-2 7-5 and promising Canadian Eugenie Bouchard now lies in wait for Elina Svitolina, the Ukrainian teenager having overcome Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-3 3-6 6-3.

"We've played three or four times, first in juniors and then a few times more recently," Svitolina told the WTA Tour's official website.

"I remember all of them. She's a great player and I'm really looking forward to that match."

Carolina Garcia of France knocked out Aleksandra Wosniak 6-3 7-5 to progress - her reward is a second-round showdown with Klara Zakopalova.
