Simmons reveals axe fears

St Helens coach Royce Simmons says he needs to bring some silverware to the club this year or he will be out of a job.

Saints were one of the dominant teams in the early days of Super League, winning the title four times in the first seven seasons, and they also won the Challenge Cup three years in a row from 2006.

But they have failed to win any silverware in the last three seasons, initially under Mick Potter, and have been beaten in each of the last five Grand Finals.

That must change this year, according to Australian Simmons, who is in the second year of his two-year contract, hoping to earn an extension.

"This club has got a great culture," he said.

"It's something I've learned since I got here.

"It's got a great history. They're proud of it and they expect to win. They do not accept not winning.

"I'd better hold a bit of silverware up this year or I'll be on the plane. That's how things are. You've got to be a winner or you don't exist too long. And that's good."
