Graeme Smith will miss South Africa's deciding fifth one-day international against Pakistan on Sunday because of an ankle injury.
The 32-year's troublesome left ankle flared up during Pakistan's three-wicket win at Kingsmead on Thursday and he was unable to field for the majority of the tourists' innings.
A statement read: "Graeme Smith has been ruled out of the fifth ODI between South Africa and Pakistan taking place at Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Sunday due to a chronic left ankle injury.
"Smith has been given a period of rest and rehabilitation and the selectors have yet to name a player to assist as a cover."
The ODI series is level at 2-2 going into the decider.
