Smith upset at 'ugly' Saddlers

Walsall boss Dean Smith said his side had turned in one of their worst displays of the season following their 1-1 draw at Bury.

Will Grigg bundled in a seventh-minute opener for Walsall, only for Dominic Poleon, on loan from Leeds, to equalise four minutes later.

Walsall, now seven games without a win, took the lead as Grigg charged down Bury goalkeeper Trevor Carson's clearance, but Smith was not impressed by his side's overall display.

"I felt that was the worst we've played, certainly on the ball," said Smith. "We had to show other qualities. They pressed us high, they play at a high-tempo and we never quite handled the ball as well as we can do.

"It's the first time we've scored a really scrappy goal, but I was really pleased for Will. His performances of late have deserved a goal.

"It was a good test for our lads, but other days we've played better and come away with nothing, so we'll take the positives. It's an evolving team and we'll continue to evolve."
