Smooth as silk for Sari

Silk Sari came out on top for the Italian combination of Luca Cumani and Andrea Atzeni in a terrific finish to the British Stallion Studs EBF Chalice Stakes at Newbury.

The 9-4 joint-favourite was taking a drop in class for this Listed race over mile and a half, but her form was starting to look smart as she had not finished too far behind Saturday's Nassau Stakes winner Sultanina in both the the Pinnacle Stakes and Lancashire Oaks at Haydock.

Perhaps the deserving winner would have been 33-1 chance and eventual third Cascading, who attempted to make all the running and refused to give in when swamped by rivals, but Silk Sari had just enough to oblige by a neck from the closing Moment In Time.

It later emerged Atzeni had been given a three-day careless riding ban (August 17-19).
