Southampton back for Townsend

Southampton have made a 12m bid for Tottenham winger Andros Townsend, Sky sources understand.

Spurs have already rejected a 10m offer for the England international but their Premier League rivals have tested their resolve to keep the 23-year-old.

Townsend secured a regular place in the Tottenham side last season, playing 33 times for them, having previously had loan spells at nine different clubs, including Leeds, Birmingham and QPR.

A series of impressive performances for England left him in line for a place at the World Cup but an ankle injury ended any chance he had of making it to Brazil as part of Roy Hodgson's squad.

Southampton, who earned their first point of the season with a goalless home draw with West Brom on Saturday, are looking to add to their squad having sold key players before the summer transfer window closes.

Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Dejan Lovren have all joined Liverpool, while highly-rated left-back Luke Shaw made a 27m move to Manchester United.
