Spain triumph in Hopman Cup

Spain won the Hopman Cup for a fourth time with a straight-sets doubles win against Serbia in the final in Perth.

Fernando Verdasco and Anabel Medina Garrigues defeated Novak Djokovic and Ana Ivanovic 6-4 7-5 in the deciding mixed doubles after coming from behind to win the final.

Novak Djokovic had given Serbia the lead with a win against Fernando Verdasco before Medina Garrigues defeated Ivanovic to take it to a decider.

Djokovic gave Serbia a 1-0 lead with a 6-3 7-5 victory over Verdasco.

After dominating the first set Djokovic was 3-0 down in the second set, but battled back to take it 7-5.

Medina Garrigues then kept Spain's hopes alive with a thrilling 6-4 6-7 (3/7) 6-2 win over Ivanovic.

The Spaniard took two hours and 38 minutes to level the tie at 1-1.

Medina Garrigues lost the first two games of the match but hit back to take the set 6-4 with an ace down the middle.

Ivanovic was leading the second set 5-3 but dropped her serve to love and was forced to a tie-break which she won 7-3.

After taking a 3-0 lead the Spaniard again broke her opponent's serve to win the set 6-2 and with it the rubber.

The match was decided in the mixed doubles as the Spanish pair dominated the first set to take it 6-4.

Verdasco and Medina Garrigues broke in game 11 of the final set and then served out to take it 7-5.

Medina Garrigues hailed the success as one of the greatest achievements of her career, which has also yielded two French Open doubles titles.

"It's one of the best (wins)," She said on www.hopmancup.com. "Well, I won at Roland Garros doubles which was really exciting also, but here I did not expect to get to the final and then win so I'm really happy."

Verdasco paid tribute to his partner, adding: "I think she (played) a big part of this Hopman Cup.

"She won three singles matches (which were) unbelievably important and she played a really good mixed to help me.

"I cannot win alone of course. She is a really good doubles player and you can see it out there in the mixed.

"It was an unbelievable week. I enjoyed it a lot to play with her and an amazing doubles win. (It was) one of the greatest moments of my career winning here today."
