Fifth seed Sam Stosur made a speedy start in the Porsche Grand Prix in Stuttgart as she needed just 59 minutes to defeat Shuai Peng 6-2 6-2.
Seventh seed Marion Bartoli was an equally convincing winner, defeating Czech qualifier Iveta Benesova 6-3 6-2, while German duo Andrea Petkovic and Julia Goerges beat Kristina Barrois and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova respectively.
Former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone was a 6-3 7-5 winner over Romania's Monica Niculescu, Angelique Kerber eased past Roberta Vinci, while two qualifiers also advanced - Hungary's Greta Arn and Alize Cornet of France.
