Italy's Potito Starace knocked out French seventh seed Jeremy Chardy in Bucharest.
Starace needed just 64 minutes to knock out Chardy and advance to the second round of the Nastase Tiriac Trophy.
The world number 76 proved far too strong for an opponent ranked 17 places above him, breaking Chardy once in the first set and rattling through the second for a one-sided 6-3 6-0 win.
Seventh seeded Lukasz Kubot of Poland avoided a similar fate as he beat Romanian Gabriel Moraru 6-2 6-3. There were also wins for Matthias Bachinger of Switzerland, and Belgian veteran Xavier Malisse.
