Stephens ousted on day of shocks

Sloane Stephens was a first-round casualty in the Internationaux de Strasbourg as she fell in straight sets to Germany's Julia Goerges.

American top-seed Stephens, who was granted a wild-card entry into the competition, was broken once in the first set and twice again in the second as Goerges triumphed 6-3 6-2 in 68 minutes.

To add to the impressive nature of the performance from Goerges, the world number 108 did not face a single break point in the match.

And on a day of shocks French second seed Alize Cornet also departed the tournament, beaten 6-4 1-6 6-3 by Italian world number 51 Camila Giorgi.

Sixth seed Bojan Jovanovski was the third seed to exit as she fell 6-4 6-0 to veteran Croatian Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, the 32-year-old taking 73 minutes to wrap up a comprehensive win.

Fourth seed Andrea Petkovic and seventh seed Shuai Peng avoided the same fate as they beat Pauline Parmentier and Ashleigh Barty respectively.

There were also wins for Lauren Davis, Monica Puig, Christina McHale and Silvia Soler-Espinosa.
