Stevenage line up Whelpdale

Sky Sports understands that Stevenage are lining up a move to sign Gillingham winger Chris Whelpdale.

The 27-year-old is out of contract at Priestfield this summer having joined from Peterborough United in 2011 on the back of a successful loan spell.

Whelpdale featured 24 times - scoring once - for Peter Taylor's side in League One this season, but recently-relegated Stevenage are now eyeing up his signature.

Despite being transfer-listed by former boss Martin Allen at the start of the campaign, Whelpdale helped the Gills finish six points above the drop zone in 17th, while Stevenage slipped into League Two having finished bottom of the table.

The winger started his career in non-league, playing for Maldon Town and Billericay Town, before making the switch to Peterborough in 2007.
