Strasbourg woe for Lisicki
Top seed Sabine Lisicki was a shock casualty on the opening day of the Strasbourg International after losing 6-4 6-4 to Pauline Parmentier.
World number 66 Parmentier broke the German once in each set and held her own serve throughout, showing few nerves as she completed an impressive victory in one hour and 26 minutes.
Austrian eighth seed Tamira Paszek had to overcome a nightmare second set to progress at the expense of Italy's Alberta Brianti. Paszek eventually prevailed 6-4 0-6 6-4 in just over two hours.
Great Britain's Elena Baltacha fell away badly as she was beaten 6-4 6-0 by world number 86 Stephanie Foretz Gacon of France, while Su-Wei Hsieh beat Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania 6-7 (7-5) 6-3 6-1.
