Struggling Marseille beaten again

Benjamin Andre's goal two minutes from full-time condemned Marseille to a 1-0 defeat to Ajaccio - their fourth straight Ligue 1 reverse.

Marseille dominated for spells and had chances to win the match but could not find a way past Guillermo Ochoa in the Ajaccio goal.

Marseille's slump has seen them drop to eighth in the standings, 16 points off the summit, with that gap likely to grow still further over the weekend.

For Ajaccio, victory was only their second in six matches but was sufficient to vault them out of the relegation zone and into the rarefied air of 13th place.

OM created the first chance on three minutes when Brandao flashed a volley just wide, while the Brazilian also went close on 15 minutes when he forced Ochoa into his first stop of the night.

Ajaccio threatened on 21 minutes when Eduardo's header from Damien Tiberi's cross was brilliantly saved by Steve Mandanda, while five minutes later Marseille were on the march again with Jordan Ayew nodding just wide of Ochoa's post.

Five minutes before the break Ayew got in behind the defence following a fine pass by Benoit Cheyrou but his left-footed shot whistled the wrong side of the far post.

Marseille failed to show the same attacking intent after the break but five minutes from the end almost came close to stealing the points when Brandao crossed for Ayew to take aim from point-blank range but Ochoa somehow pulled off a superb reflex save.

A minute later Andre shot over when clean through for the hosts, but he made amends in telling fashion in the 88th minute, the midfielder timing his run perfectly to connect with a Johan Cavalli cross and steer the ball inside the near post.
