Southend boss Paul Sturrock cut a frustrated figure after Accrington stole a 1-0 win at Roots Hall.
Visiting goalkeeper Ian Dunbavin pulled off a string of fine saves as Stanley grabbed their first away win since January thanks to Karl Sheppard's 61st minute header.
"I'm gutted because we should have won the game," said Sturrock.
"If you look at the chances we had and the number of crosses we put into the box then there's no way we should've lost.
"That's what can happen in football though and well done to Accrington because they worked hard for the win.
"I'm naturally disappointed but there are still some positives in there for us."
