Suarez Navarro into round two

Third seed Carla Suarez Navarro was among the winners on the first day of play at the BNP Paribas Katowice Open.

The Spaniard, ranked 17th in the world, eased past Belgium's Alison van Uytvanck 6-4 6-0 and will next play Alexandra Cadantu, who also beat a Belgian, Yanina Wickmayer, 3-6 6-1 6-1.

Annika Beck won the battle of the Germans 6-1 6-4 against Mona Barthel, while Italy's Camila Giorgi was the most emphatic winner of the day, beating local hope Katarzyna Piter 6-0 6-1.

Giorgi upset Maria Sharapova on her way to the fourth round in Indian Wells last month, but then lost her first qualifying match in Miami.

Also through to the second round is Israel's Shahar Peer, who defeated Petra Martic of Croatia 6-4 6-4.
