Successful defence for Ferrer

David Ferrer captured the 20th ATP Tour title of his career on Sunday as he defeated Stanislas Wawrinka to lift the Copa Claro title in Buenos Aires.

The Spaniard claimed his second tournament victory of the season as he successfully defended his title in the Argentine capital against the third-seeded Swiss star Wawrinka.

Top seed Ferrer broke Wawrinka six times, three of them in the final set, to emerge with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory for a 10th win on clay.

World number for Ferrer has been in sparkling form this season, winning 17 of his 19 matches and also successfully defending his Heineken Open title in Auckland.

The 30-year-old improved to 7-3 against Wawrinka as he recovered from losing the second set to win the last five games on the spin to seal victory in an hour and 45 minutes on court.

"It is difficult to defend a tournament but tennis has been kind to me and I am very happy to have done so. I shall savour the moment," said Ferrer.

"Winning 20 titles is tough and I never thought I would get to that total but sometimes you achieve more than you dreamed of."

Wawrinka is still enjoying something of a breakthrough season after his impressive display at the Australian Open and now making his first appearance in a final since 2011 in India.

A three-time winner on the ATP Tour, Wawrinka was always going to be up against it in Buenos Aires given that no player from outside of Spain or South America has won the title since the event began in 2001.
