Sunderland claims stage win

Sam Sunderland put his previous Dakar Rally troubles behind him to claim victory on stage two in the bike classification in Argentina.

The 23-year-old Honda rider withdrew three days into the 2012 edition and fractured both his wrists shortly before last year's event but was a clear winner on Monday, finishing 39 seconds clear of Chile's Francisco Lopez Contardo on his KTM.

Spain's Joan Barreda Bort was third on his Honda and holds a lead of two minutes three seconds in the overall bike standings.

Two-time defending champion Stephane Peterhansel, in his Mini, picked up a 62nd stage win in the car class as the race moved from San Luis to San Rafael.

The Frenchman finished 46 seconds clear of Spain's Carlos Sainz (SMG) to establish a 28-second overall lead.

Argentina's Marcos Patronelli won the quad stage to to take an overall lead of 3mins 50secs, while Dutchman Gerard de Rooy was victorious in the trucks, establishing a 13min 57secs lead in the standings.
